The Clarenville Area SPCA, a registered charity since 1989, is responsible for servicing a large part of eastern Newfoundland including the Bonavista Peninsula. While we are affiliated with the Canadian Federation of Humane Societies and the Newfoundland and Labrador SPCA, we also work closely with other shelters, rescue groups, and agencies concerned with animal welfare to provide the best level of protection for animals.

Our organization is funded through donations and the proceeds from fundraising events, with no core government funding. On June 3, 2008, the Government of Newfoundland & Labrador announced a grant of $5,000.00 to each of six regional SPCA Associations, with our shelter being one of the recipients. We are governed by a board of directors, comprised of volunteers, and enjoy the assistance of more than one hundred supporters who help with our annual flea markets, bake sales, ticket sales, and Walk for the Animals.
The Gladys Groves Copeland Animal Shelter, which opened in 1994, is located on Huntley Drive. We have two employees who work from Monday to Saturday; but the remaining weekend, evening, and holiday shifts are covered by volunteers. As well, reports of cruelty and neglect are investigated by trained volunteers who work under the auspices of the Animal Protection Act. This Act allows these Special Constables to take action where cruelty or mistreatment of animals is discovered.
Our mission is to protect and care for animals that have no other shelter. When possible, we expand our services to include animals whose owners have to relinquish them for one reason or another. We have established a special fund to spay or neuter selected animals to enhance their adoptability. Our aim is to educate people to treat animals with the respect and love that they deserve and to encourage people to be responsible pet owners.
