A Pit Bull's Christmas

T'was the night before Christmas and the shelter is dark,
The whole place is silent, not even a bark.
The dogs are all locked in their pens for the night,
The staff has gone home and turned out the light.

As I lay my head down on the cold concrete floor,
I fondly recall the home I had before.
The family I loved, who loved me right back,
We'd share everything -- from secret to snack.

Things couldn't be better at this time last year,
But that has all changed and now I am here.
I won't see the tree, the lights, or the snow,
I'm scared and alone, my spirits are low.

The others like me weren't put up for adoption,
A new family and home, for us aren't an option.
We've been locked up in cells as if we're all crooks,
We don't deserve homes because of our looks.

Not Diesel, or Bingo, or the young one named Percy,
Deserve to be loved nor shown any mercy.
While families celebrate holiday cheer,
I know in my heart that my end is near.

The vet will arrive, the lights will go on,
By the time you awake, we all will be gone.
A stranger will come and take me away,
I'll never wake to see another day.

As I close my eyes I'll shed you a tear,
The fond memories I'll always keep near.
The only thing I've ever asked of Santa Claus,
Is to stop all these unfair and ridiculous laws.

You said without me, your life was not full,
So why does it matter that I'm a "pit bull"?
In my dream Santa shouts when he's finished his deed,
"MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL...REGARDLESS OF BREED"!

In My Kitchen

In my Kitchen There lies a bowl Made of the finest marble
It's for a dog, ya know Not one that's here
Or lived here before But for the dog out there I may never know
It's left in the kitchen To remind us all
That somewhere there is a dog Whose belly's not full
It lays here waiting Just in case That dog comes here
For love and grace So people ask Why keep this bowl?
The answers easy The story I told
There is a dog That needs this bowl He lays in my heart
My body and soul He fights each day Just to
survive And the bowl Will lay waiting Til the end of time

Lost Souls

I see little souls wearing fur,
souls who bark and souls who purr....
Born unwanted and unloved,
I see all this and more from above....
I watch them suffer, I see them cry,
I see them lost, I watch them die....
I see unwanted thousands born....
and when they die...nobody mourns....
These are castaways who will never see love or security....
A few short months they starve and roam,
Or caged in shelters--nobody takes home....
We cry, we feel, we love....
Our presence now only known from God above....
My pain and suffering came to an end,
so don't cry for me, my person, my friend....
The living ones need you now....
Please stop their abuse somehow.

A Rescuer's Creed

I shall be a believer of all that is good in man and
of all that is deserving in animals.
I shall plead for their lives, campaign for their
safety and uphold their right to a natural death.
I shall seek out the injured and the maimed, the
unloved, and the abandoned and tend to
them in their last days.
I shall not forget their place in the hierarchy of
life, nor that we walk in each other's paths.
I shall bear witness to the wonder they bring into
our lives and to the beauty they bestow upon our souls.
I shall renew their spirits when they are waning,
bind their wounds when they bleed,
cradle them when they whimper,
and comfort them when they mourn.
I shall be near them in their hour of greatest need,
a companion and friend when the time has come.
I shall watch over them and console them and
ask that the angels gather them in their arms.
From the creatures of the earth I shall learn the
fruits of compassion and undying love,
and I shall be called the beloved of God.
In their company I shall indeed be blessed.

We Are An Animal Rescuer

Our job is to assist God's creatures.
We were born with the drive to fulfill their needs.
We take in helpless, unwanted, homeless
creatures without planning or selection.
We have bought dog food with our last dime.
We have patted a mangy head with a bare hand.
We have hugged someone vicious and afraid.
We have fallen in love a thousand times.
We have cried into the fur of a lifeless body too many times to count.
We have Animal Friends and friends who have animal friends.
We don't often use the word "pet".
We notice those lost at the road side and my heart aches.
We will hand raise a field mouse and make friends with a vulture.
We know of no creature unworthy of our time.
We want to live forever if there aren't animals in Heaven,
but We believe there are.
Why would God make something so perfect and leave it behind?
Some may think we are masters of the animals,
but the animals have mastered themselves... something people still haven't learned.
War and abuse make our hurt for the world,
but a rescue that makes the news gives us hope for mankind.
We are a quiet but determined army
and we are making a difference every day.
There is nothing more necessary than warming an orphan,
nothing more rewarding than saving a life,
no higher recognition than watching them thrive.
There is no greater joy than seeing a baby play who,
only days ago, was too weak to eat.
By the love of those who we've been privileged to rescue,
we have been rescued.
We know what true unconditional love really is,
for we've seen it shining in the eyes of so many, grateful for so little.
We are an Animal Rescuer.
Our work is never done.
Our home is never quiet.
Our wallet is always empty, but our heart is always full.

'Tis Lonely Here In Prison

'Tis lonely here in prison,
I dream of sun, of fields,
I saw them from a window once,
but I don't know how they feel.
I've never known a caress,
a friend, a bone, a toy,
I'd happily companion,
a human girl or boy.
But some men have decided,
with selfishness and greed,
that my fate shall be a cage,
and for my keep, I'll breed.
What should fuel this folly?
My kind may bark in vain.
We care not for your commerce,
and few know of our pain.
We're hidden well from justice,
for our freedom some may cry.
God grant me, please, just one request -
Let me play once before I die.

DOG

When God had made the earth and sky,
The flowers and the trees.
He then made all the animals,
The fish, the birds and bees.
And when at last He'd finished,
Not one was quite the same.
He said, "I'll walk this world of mine,
And give each one a name."
And so He traveled far and wide
And everywhere He went,
A little creature followed Him
Until its strength was spent.
When all were named upon the earth
And in the sky and sea,
The little creature said, "Dear Lord,
There's not one left for me."
Kindly the Father said to him,
"I've left you to the end.
I've turned my own name back to front
And called you dog, my friend."

Dear Lord

Please watch over our humans, they are so weak. They have no claws or teeth, they can't run fast or fly away, neither can they burrow or build a nest in which to be safe. They smell bad, do strange things that aren't altogether intelligent, have no real ability to communicate with us, although we are able to figure out what they want.

Lord, grant US the ability to watch over our humans, care for them, cheer them when they are down, make them laugh, smile, and shower them with our love. We pray that we can bring a little joy into their otherwise mundane existence...

Lord...please let them know that when we insist on getting attention, its so we can check their emotional well being and boost their morale. When we pester them for different foods, toys, etc, its so they will learn to see us in ways they hadn't considered, bringing them closer and back into the fold... which they are part of but keep forgetting about. They expect us to know what they want even though sometimes they don't know what we want.

Some of them really try and we know they love us but some of them are so dumb yet our love for them remains intensely unfaltering.

Lord, when we die, please make sure to send us ahead to where ever our humans are going to be, so we can pave the way for them, vouch for them and be there for them when they too die.. ....please allow us to continue proving the humans are worth the effort. You placed these humans in dominion over us, but you charged us with the task of caring for them and SHOWING them your love every day, through us.

God bless these mere mortal humans, they know not that we are their guardian angels sent in love to task them so that they may grow to be part of your plan.

You and Us God... we'll bring them back into the fold... you and us.

Rescue Angels

Tail tucked between your legs,
Confusion in your eyes -
I know it's hard to understand
That someone heard your cries.

When loneliness is all you know
And pain is all you feel
And no one can be trusted,
And hunger's all too real...

That's the time the Lord sees you
And lets you know He's there
That's when He sends His messengers
The hearts that love and care.

Yes, rescuers are angels
You cannot see their wings,
They keep them neatly folded
As they do their caring things.

The medicine to make you well
Good food to make you strong,
And finally to help you learn
That hugs are never wrong.

The perfect place then must be found
The home where you can live
Secure and safe and happy
With joy to get and give.

When you reach your Forever Home,
Your place to feel whole,
The Angels smile, and off they go
To save another soul.

I Have Done Something

I looked at all the caged animals in the shelter; the cast-offs of human society.

I saw in their eyes love and hope, fear and dread, sadness, and betrayal. And I was angry.

"God," I said, "this is terrible! Why don't you do something?"

God was silent for a moment, and then spoke softly, "I have done something," was the reply. "I created you."
