Each year, as the statistics below demonstrate, we have dealt with ever-higher numbers of animals in need. However, we are proud to say that we are placing more and more of them and, in recent years, have even been able to help animals in need from pounds and shelters in other parts of the island.

In 2005 our shelter director, Anne Marie, saw a plea for help on the Bay of Islands website. Duke, who was found straying, was a young, neutered male dog who was being held at the Corner Brook pound. He was running out of time and would soon be euthanized. We brought Duke to our shelter; and although it took four months, he finally found a wonderful new home

The following year, with Rod Lyver of Pet Transfer helping to arrange transportation, we rescued a total of 40 dogs and 3 kittens from the Corner Brook pound. In addition, we helped to place another 9 dogs from that area, four of which we housed and were later adopted from our shelter and 5 which we arranged to send to other rescue groups on the island. In 2005 and 2006, we were also able to rescue a total of four dogs from the Torbay pound that were in dire need of shelter.

Over the years, the hard work and dedication of our shelter staff and volunteers have made all the difference in our ability to help animals. We do our utmost to find solutions for animals that are older or that need medical care – euthanasia is always a last resort. Now, we are proud to say that we have become a “low-kill” shelter. With the continuing assistance of our supporters, who adopt pets from us and make financial contributions for those animals with special needs, we will strive to continue along this path.
