Lacey, From Chained Onto A Dog House, To A Wonderful Life! |
 | |
|
Hello Tina
Finally got a few photos of Lacey for you. Only took three years. She is doing very well, both physically and mentally. With good food and shelter, she grew a beautiful full coat and a big bushy tail. Her time with Glenn Redman helped her a lot; she no longer eats car interiors or hotel rooms. She actually stays in the house all day with the two cats with only minor casualties of pillows and the chesterfield skirt (I hated that chesterfield anyway)! Thanks to you and to everyone who kept Lacey alive until we adopted her. She is very well loved (spoiled beyond redemption) and we can't imagine being without her!
Take care
Linda & Wayne
The SPCA was called to report a dog and 2 young pups living chained to a dog house. The SPCA removed poor Lacey and her 2 pups from an old, tiny dog house. They were thin, and very dirty. The pups found homes, and Lacey stayed at the shelter for a few months. Lacey was a very difficult dog to handle, as a result of living outside chained to a dog house.
Lacey was eventually adopted out to the wonderful family that she has now. Lacey was a very difficult dog, who required much time, extreme amounts of patience and training, and a whole lot of love! Not to mention the fact that she cost her new owners alot of money replacing furniture, truck interiors, and too many other things to mention. The important part of this story is... That her family did whatever was necessary to train Lacey to become an acceptable member of their family. They loved her unconditionally and made Laceys life a life of love and patience! They did not give up on her! Today, she is happy, healthy, and living in a wonderful home where she is much loved!

Sheeba |
 | |
|
Remember beautiful Sheeba, the young collie cross that you sent to us in renal failure?
Well I am THRILLED to announce after a year and a half, we found the MOST perfect, loving, home for her!
Her "forever family" adore her and say she is the best dog EVER, and bring much joy to their lives, and I know Sheeba gets that much joy and love back two-fold!
Her renal condition, has not worsened, nor has it gotten "better" of course, however she is just as lively and loving as the day she arrived.
Sheeba's new family, are aware that she requires a special diet for life, in addition to routine bloodwork/urine tests but do not mind one bit. We could not have found a more perfect home, and honestly her adoption, we consider is our "Adoption of the Year."
Although it was difficult to say good-bye to her from our Sanctuary, it made it so much less difficult after finding the most perfect home who loves her ''just because she is so wonderful."
I just had to share the joyous news with you..even though tears stream down because we miss her, they are also tears of pure joy for Sheeba and her new family.

Sheeba came to our shelter from the pound in Torbay. She was sweet as pie and only a young girl at about 7 to 8 months of age. Shortly after arriving with us we realized she was drinking an awful lot. We took Sheeba to see the vet and we were devastated to learn she was in kidney failure. We knew this was most likely a death sentence for our sweet girl. Thanks to the support of some great people and many donations we were able to get Sheeba the care she needed. We had also found a great rescue in Ontario that dealt with special needs dogs like Sheeba. So it was decided to send Sheeba to Kelli with Westminister Pet Sanctuary. After over $1000.00 of expenses Sheeba was finally in a safe place. Below is the latest update from Sheeba's rescue angel, Kelli.
Sheeba during spay, developed a really odd condition where her teats fill with blood. Despite Specialists trying to figure out the Why's..there are no simple answers, they believe it is linked to the renal failure. This however does NOT slow her down one bit!!! She is so playful, loving, FULL of energy and beans we can hardly keep up with her! We doubt she will ever be adopted because of her medical issues and with renal failure you really do not know if they have 5 months or 5 years. Kind of difficult to find a forever home with those kind of odds. So she will be a permanent resident here. She is NOT in pain, has a great quality of life and loves it to the max! She continues to go in for weekly bloodwork and urinalysis. Look at her face though..we will NOT be the ones telling her "We give up on you" and she knows that. Such a beautiful girl!

Chico Update |
 | |
 | |
|
Heres a couple of pics of Chico taken over christmas, one is of him in his favorite spot, the back seat of the car with his Garfield blanket, he had a wonderful christmas, Santa brought him lots of nice treats, I think he got a little confused christmas morning and opted to stay on his dog bed in our room, rather than join the madness of the girls opening their presents, he did well after that, greeting any company we had with a wagging tail, and his little howling noise. I really hope Reggie is as lucky, if I had more room, he'd be joining our fur family.
Happy New Year to all your wonderful staff at the shelter, your all angels, Chico is proof of that.
Thanks again, without you, we wouldnt' have him.

Mr. Bones When He First Came To The Shelter |
 | |
 | |
|
One day we had a call come into the shelter about a dog that was extremely thin and should be checked on. One of our Special Constables went out one evening to investigate the situation.
Upon arriving on the property he found a poor dog in an emaciated state tied to an old dog house. After talking to the owners for some time he decided that the dog had to be removed and taken to the shelter.
At the shelter this poor old dog was given the name Mr. Bones based on his terrible condition. Mr. Bones was an older German Shepherd mix and a big frame dog yet he only weighed 38 lbs. He was extremely hungry and devoured his food as fast as it was given to him.
The RCMP laid charges in this case against the owner for animal cruelty. The outcome of the case is still unknown.

Mr. Bones After A Couple Weeks At The Shelter |
 | |
 | |
|
After only one week with us Mr. Bones gained an amazing 11 pounds. What a difference only a few days of proper care made in how Mr. Bones looked. He sure was happy to be getting lots of food and the attention that he craved so badly.
Unfortunately after many weeks in our care Mr. Bones had still not found a forever home and due to overcrowding at the shelter we decided to send him to East Coast German Shepherd Rescue in Nova Scotia. Many thanks to Leah for accepting this poor guy and finding him a great foster home until a forever home could be found for him.

Mr. Bones In His New Home |
 |
|
Hello Paula and Leah,
Before I get started just want to thank you for the wonderful dog!! I’ve been working quite a bit on training and wanted to give an update on that. He’s very smart and has been learning rather quickly.
When I got back to PEI, I let bones run free for most of the day. I started by doing a few rounds around the property just so he would know his borders, correcting him when he would. This is where he started to learn his name and responds immediately when I call him. I just call him Bones now.
I worked on his jumping and nibbling as well, correcting him whenever he would do so. He has made outstanding progress. He now greets me on all four paws (the real test will be when he sees new people). His nibbling is almost where I want it to be. The first few days he really left some good marks however by Monday he realized this is no longer acceptable. He’ll still chew on my gloves from time to time as I am walking by but it is more of a attention nibble and less of a destructive one.
I'm working on his leash training for when he is not out here. He pulled very hard at first so I’m working on getting him to walk loose lease. Just like the bad habits he is learning very quickly. I started by holding him back with one arm and keeping a treat on my side, allowing him to nibble on it as he walked by my side. This seemed to work quite well. Also, I spent pretty much the whole day yesterday moving around dirt in the garden. He would follow me from one shovel to the next and this is where I found he made his best progress. He was getting tired but would still keep following me and started to realize I am suppose to lead. Ever since then on the leash he pulls a lot less, at this point he’ll pull and then basically come back to me, then repeat. Hopefully by Saturday he will be there!
He’s given me quite a few laughs:
- He has this little dance now whenever I see him for the first time in the morning. He pounds his big paws on the ground.
- He's started to play in the water a little bit and enjoys running the shoreline. He'll never go past his belly and its too cold for me to go in the water.
- For a big dog, he can sure get in a little ball when he's sleeping. Sometimes he falls asleep nibbling on his back foot, its the oddest thing!
Like both of you know he has a heart of gold. He needs lots of attention which I have no problems giving it to him. I’m outside a lot and have no problems taking him with me.
Regards,
Mike

Casper a.k.a Spirit Before |
 | |
 | |
|
Casper a.k.a. Spirit came into our shelter in an awful mess. He was so severely matted and dirty that he was hard to even look at. On top of all that mess he had an extremely bad case of ear mites, his poor ears were blocked with the dried black blood from the mites, and he had an injured leg that he was limping on. Why would anyone treat such a wonderful cat like this? We would love for someone to explain the reason for this cat's horrible condition.
Despite all that, all he wanted was attention and to be loved. He just purred and purred and...... Well his beautiful green eyes could just melt anyones heart within minutes.
It was decided that this cat needed to see a vet as soon as possible to be shaved, his leg examined and have his ears treated. Thanks to Ruff Spots he was also neutered at the same time. He came back to the shelter looking and feeling much better.
It didn't take long for all the volunteers to fall in love with this beautiful boy and we thought he would be adopted right away. But many weeks later he was still sitting here and two of our volunteers decided to try him at their house. Read about his wonderful new life below.
The top two pictures are of Casper before he was shaved and the bottom two of him after he was shaved.

Casper a.k.a Spirit After |
 | |
 | |
|
Well this is Spirit, once known as Casper. I fell in love with this poor cat from the first moment I saw him on the first day he arrived at the shelter in such a pitiful state. I wanted to bring him home then but was still grieving the lost of my cat and wasn't quite ready.
Spirit is an amazing cat. From the minute we brought him home he fit in perfectly with our family. He loves the dogs and the other cats and we love him to pieces. We both have a special place in our hearts for this handsome boy, maybe because he is the only cat we have that was once mistreated. All of our cats were adopted but they never knew abuse like our poor Spirit did. He is the most affectionate cat we have and he loves everybody who comes to visit.
We want to thank this shelter for giving him the care he so desperately needed when he came in and caring for him until we brought him home.
